Amazon Goes International, Signs Exclusive Streaming Deals With Indian Movie Studios

Amazon hasn’t quite brought its Prime Video service to India, but it is trying to stake a claim in the international market arms race.

Amazon India is partnering with a number of major Indian movie production studios for exclusive rights to stream their films (both upcoming and previous), with two large partnerships were announced last week alone.

Netflix has made it clear they have international aspirations (they launched in India and 100 other regions earlier this year), so this is a preemptive strike of sorts for Amazon to be the go-to streaming source in the world’s second most populous country.

While Netflix has signed deals with some Indian TV shows and comedians for exclusives, and some deals with Indian movie studios for single projects, they don’t yet have any exclusive movie right of their own.

It’s expected that Amazon will announced Indian Prime Video around October 30 to coincide with the festival of Diwali, India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year.

Amazon India has signed deals already with names like T-Series, SS Rajamouli, Dharma Productions, Graphic India and Arka Mediaworks.
