Amazon has made it clear they want to enter the streaming sports market, and they’re looking to add Indian cricket matches to their stable.
The Indian Premier League has reported an “overwhelming response” from companies bidding on streaming rights to cricket matches, including Facebook, ESPN, and Sony, plus BT Group Plc and Sky Plc. Amazon is expected to be one of the highest bidders for the rights.
What makes Amazon so interested in Indian cricket? India is the world’s second most populated nation and it’s expected they will have about 730 million internet users in the next few years. So it’s not hard to see why a lot of companies see the potential in streaming the country’s most popular sport.
Most people in India would be watching on a mobile device, so companies already well entrenched in mobile streaming have an early edge in bidding.
Amazon Prime has been signing deal after deal with Indian production companies to exclusively stream their content, while Facebook has been experimenting with live sports on their own, including behind the scenes interviews with athletes during games.
