Amazon’s ‘Transparent’ Will Be Back for Season 5, Surprising No One

It’s good — but unsurprising — news for Amazon’s award-winning flagship dramedy Transparent. With a little under a month until the show’s fourth-season premiere, Amazon has announced it will be back for season five.

Transparent‘s renewal should come as surprise to no one. The show, which stars Jeffrey Tambor as a recently transitioned transgender woman dealing with the in and outs of daily life with her large family, is one of Amazon’s most visible and critically acclaimed original shows thus far. Transparent also stars Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, and Amy Landecker. The show’s first three seasons have earned multiple Emmys and Golden Globes, and it’s racked up seven more Emmy noms for 2017. Transparent will return for a fourth season on September 22, 2017. The newly announced season 5 will likely bow about a year later, in fall 2018.

Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR, Amazon Studios. said:

Over the past few seasons the Pfeffermans have gone across the world, back in time and made many, many trips to the deli. We’re so excited to see what magic Jill and the incredible team bring to this always groundbreaking series in season five.

Show creator Jill Soloway said of the renewal:

We are extremely grateful to Amazon Studios for their continued trust and support and to our audience for their warm embrace of the Pfeffermans. We look forward to another season of comedy and drama, love and weirdness, God and sex — in the service of community and in pursuit of peace, joy, freedom and human rights for all.

With the show’s return a month away, there’s still time to catch up. The first three seasons Transparent are available streaming on Amazon Prime. If you’re not a Prime subscriber, it’s also currently enjoying a limited run on SundanceTV. It’s funny, quirky, heartfelt, and very timely, given the ongoing debates about transgender rights in our society. If Jeffrey Tambor can’t win you over, I don’t know how to help you.
