American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story Launches April 7 on Amazon Prime

An Amazon original series about an American icon is set to debut early next month. American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story tells the story of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner, who used his charismatic personality to disrupt the “status quo” of the day and create one of the most recognizable brands in history. The series combines actual archive footage along with reenactments, pulling content from thousands of hours of footage from Hef’s personal archives.

The 10 episode documentary series (which is produced by the Emmy award-winning Stephen David Entertainment) will premiere in more than 200 nations on April 7. Additionally, the first episode will be available to stream for free on from April 14 through April 21.

Starting in 1953, this series follows the launch of Playboy through the next six decades of Hefner’s life. As Hefner’s empire expands, he becomes not just a magazine founder, but an advocate for social justice. Even though he quickly became a target for the conservative movement of the day, he continued to fight for expression and freedom.

With unprecedented access to thousands of hours of never before seen footage, this series also dips in to Hefner’s 3,000 personal scrapbooks, which actually constitute a Guinness World Record.

Although he’s 90 now, Hefner was deeply involved in the series’ development and production.

Conrad Riggs, Head of Unscripted, Amazon Originals, said that the series is actually quite timely. “At a time when civil rights are more in the news than ever, Prime members will be delighted to learn more about the Playboy brand and its contributions in that area,” he said, “This series will offer the unprecedented, behind-the-scenes story of Hefner’s life and his fight to protect and advance essential American rights, including free speech.”

The series will be available to all Amazon Prime customers, who get access to Prime Video‘s huge content library as a part of their $99 a year subscription.
