To borrow a line from David Ruprecht, “The next time you’re at the checkout and you hear the beep, think of the fun you could have watching Supermarket Sweep.”
If you’re a fan of the classic game show (the 1990s version), a handful of episodes are now streaming on Netflix. Unfortunately, it’s only 15 episodes, but that’s still a solid 5 or 6 hours of frantic supermarket fun.
Not familiar with the show? It featured three teams of two people each competing in various trivia challenges to earn time towards their total. In the final round, all three teams set out on a frenzied run through a grocery store piling as many items in their grocery carts as they can. The team with the highest price total wins and gets the chance to compete in a “bonus sweep” round for $5,000. In that last round, the team has to follow clues to find a specially marked item containing $5,000.
Coincidentally (maybe), there’s a reboot in the works set to hit ABC later this year, hosted by Leslie Jones. There’s also two full seasons of the show available on Amazon Prime.
