The Departed: Amazon Developing Series Based on Scorsese Flick

Amazon has an Emmy-winning hit with Transparent, and the streaming network is getting ever more ambitious with its original programming. Now Amazon is developing a series based on the Academy Award-winning 2006 Martin Scorsese movie The Departed.

Deadline reports that Amazon Studios is teaming with Warner Bros. TV for the upcoming crime drama. Detroit 1-8-7 creator Jason Richman is handling writing duties. While the series will use the Scorsese film as a jumping-off point, the show will be exploring a different setting. The Departed delved into the criminal underworld of the Irish mob in Boston. Amazon’s Departed series will relocated the action to Chicago and follow a young cop infiltrating a Latino gang. However, just as in the movie, this will be a two-sided tale: the series will also a gang mole working inside the police department.

The original Departed was directed by Scorsese and written by William Monahan. But this Departed Amazon series would actually be the third riff on the same story. The Departed movie was based on the 2002 Hong Kong crime flick Infernal Affairs. Scorsese’s American remake swept the Oscars, taking home awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Amazon’s certainly working with some solid source material.

This proposed Departed series is the second recently announced high-profile Amazon Studios project based on a well-known IP. Earlier this month Amazon revealed The Office‘s John Krasinski will be headlining a Jack Ryan series, based on the character created by Tom Clancy. Both shows should definitely pull more eyeballs to Amazon Prime’s TV lineup. While Amazon has produced some solid original series, with the exception of Transparent and The Man in the High Castle, few have become water-cooler phenomena like many of Netflix’s shows have. The Departed could help change that.

It also sounds like it’d be a perfect binging double feature with Amazon’s Bosch.
