Emily the Strange Becoming Animated Movie at Amazon

Netflix had a massive word-of-mouth hit this past summer with Stranger Things. Marvel continued their box-office reign this fall with Doctor Strange. Now Amazon wants a piece of the action, and they’ve got their sights set on something strange for themselves…Emily the Strange, to be exact.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Amazon Studios is developing an animated film based on the popular advertising mascot and comic character Emily the Strange. Skateboarder Rob Reger created Emily back in the 1990s as part of a line of skateboard graphics. The dark-haired girl with the horde of cats and a love for the macabre became a huge crossmedia hit, popping up on everything from clothes to toys to just about anything else you can think of. Now Amazon is partnering with Dark Horse Entertainment to bring Emily to life with animation.

Dark Horse has been in the Emily business since 2005, when they began publishing comic books featuring the character. She also spawned a series of young adult novels published by HarperCollins and co-written by Emily creator Reger and Jessica Gruner.

This isn’t the first time Emily has been on track for a film or television adaptation, either. Reger has been trying to get the property on screen since 2000, with projects sparking and then dying at first Fox Animation and then Universal. The Universal version was slated to star Chloe Grace Moretz and feature a script by Mirror Mirror screenwriter Melisa Wallack, but it stalled and the rights lapsed.

There are no writers or directors attached yet, but Streaming Observer will keep you posted when there’s more to know. In the meantime, check out a trailer for one of the Emily the Strange books below. It gives a small taste of what we might could expect from the Amazon animated movie, should it come to fruition.
