Future Man: Hulu Orders Seth Rogen Sci-Fi Comedy to Series

Hulu will be traveling to the future with Seth Rogen. Entertainment Weekly reports that Hulu has ordered to series Future Man, a half-hour comedy executive produced by Rogen and starring The Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson. Rogen’s longtime partner Evan Goldberg will also executive produce.

Hutcherson is best known for playing Peeta in the Hunger Games franchise. In Future Man, he’ll play a janitor and gamer who is, for some reason, sent into the future to save humanity from certain doom. Why a sanitation engineer has the right stuff to prevent mankind’s end remains to be seen. With the gaming angle, maybe it’ll be some sort of Last Starfighter thing, where his gaming skills just happen to be effective against the future threat.

Frequent Rogen collaborators Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter wrote Future Man. In the past, they’ve penned flicks such as Sausage Party and The Night Before. Rogen and Goldeberg directed the pilot for the show. Hutcherson will head up a cast that includes Eliza Coupe (Happy Endings), Derek Wilson (Preacher), Ed Begley Jr. (St. Elsewhere), and Glenne Headley (The Night Of).

Future Man is the latest project marking a return to television for Rogen. He first broke out as one of the co-stars of the short-lived cult hit Freaks and Geeks. He and Goldberg shepherded AMC’s Preacher earlier this year, and and they’re also developing another comic adaptation of Garth Ennis’ The Boys for Showtime.

Hulu has been full-speed-ahead when it comes to announcing high profile projects lately. They’ve got a star-studded adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in the works. They’re also partnering with Marvel for a series based on the hit comic series Runaways. That sort of top-tier original content will be crucial now that Hulu is switching to a subscription-only model and trying to more directly compete with Netflix.
