The legendary films of one of animation’s most respected studios, Studio Ghibli, are headed to a streaming service for the first time. Starting in the spring of 2020, the entire catalog of Studio Ghibli films will be available on HBO Max.
Most well known for their award winning movies like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Kiki’s Delivery Service, Studio Ghibli has been responsible for some of the most breathtakin animated films ever made.
“As a premium content brand, HBO Max is an ideal home for our films,” said Koji Hoshino, Chairman of Studio Ghibli. “Existing Ghibli fans will be able enjoy their favorites and delve deeper into the library, while whole new audiences will be able to discover our films for the first time.”
HBO Max will be a US only product at first, but could head for an international launch if things go well. The streaming service has quietly been picking up content from Cartoon Network, Warner Bros., TNT, TBS and more. All 236 episodes of Friends will be available on the service, as will the entirety of another ’90s classic, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Studio Ghibli’s acclaimed catalog of films includes:
Castle in the Sky
