Hulu is Bringing Back the ’90s with Retro TGIF Lineup

The two biggest names in streaming video-on-demand, Netflix and Hulu, have been doing their best to tap into millennial nostalgia. It makes sense, given that over 75% of millennials regularly use a streaming service and are cutting the cable in droves (or never signing up in the first place). Netflix has revived Fuller House, adapted classic video game franchise Castlevania, and will soon reboot Carmen Sandiego. Not to be outdone in the nostalgia department by their closest rival, Hulu has gone all in and is bringing back ABC’s classic primetime TGIF lineup thanks to an agreement with Warner Bros.

According to a Hulu press release, the deal includes every episode of classic ABC series Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, Perfect Strangers and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. All of the series were at one time part of ABC’s TGIF lineup, a prime time block of wholesome, family-friendly comedies that aired on Friday nights between 1989 and 2000. ABC marketed the TGIF series together as a unit, so it makes sense for Hulu to go all in and sign the rights to multiple TGIF series at once. Netflix was reportedly in talks for the rights to Full House to stream alongside its Fuller House reboot, but lost to Hulu due to Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution wanting to keep the TGIF lineup as a whole.

Craig Erwich, Hulu’s senior VP of content, issued a somewhat passive aggressive statement claiming that even though Hulu has groundbreaking new original series, some audiences still prefer to relive their childhoods through re-watching shows like the TGIF lineup:

It’s hard to believe we’re talking about Full House and Handmaid’s Tale in the same sentence — but these are stories that stand out and serve different needs. Sometimes people are in the mood for something that is very new and challenging, and sometimes people want something comfortable. Our job is to have the shows that feed those experiences.

ABC’s TGIF lineup of Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, Perfect Strangers and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper will appear on Hulu on September 29.
