Hulu Losing CW Shows This September

If you’re a fan of The CW’s shows who has been getting your fix from Hulu, here comes some bad news. The doomsday clock has officially begun counting down, with Hulu set to remove all 13 CW network shows from their streaming catalog on Sunday, September 18.

This catalog culling comes after Netflix struck a huge deal with The CW earlier this year. In something of a coup, the new partnership will bring The CW’s original shows to Netflix much faster than in the past. Traditionally, Netflix wouldn’t get the latest seasons of shows like Arrow and Supernatural until a year or so after the season finale aired on television. The Netflix/CW pact will narrow that window considerably, although a full timetable of what will be available when has not yet been announced.

A Hulu press release reveals the full rundown of CW shows due to leave the service on September 18:

  • The 100
  • Arrow
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Containment
  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
  • DC’s Legends of Tomorrow
  • The Flash
  • iZombie
  • Jane the Virgin
  • The Originals
  • Reign
  • Supernatural
  • Vampire Diaries

The loss the of the CW shows comes amidst huge changes for Hulu. The streaming service announced earlier this month that it was killing its free ad-supported tier and switching to an all-subscription model. It’s also expected to launch a live streaming service in early 2017, hoping to compete against Sling TV.

In the meantime, Yahoo is launching a service called “Yahoo View” that will be similar to the “free” model that made Hulu a household name. There are a few caveats, however. Like Hulu before it, Yahoo View will allow viewers to stream the five most recent episodes of many popular TV series, as well as some Hulu content. However, Yahoo View is currently only available for desktop streaming. Mobile apps and support for other devices is said to be planned for the future.
