Marvel’s Runaways will be Hulu’s first collaboration with the popular comic and movie empire.
Hulu has officially announced that it has ordered what could become a hot new property for the streaming service: Marvel’s Runaways. The comic book version of The Runaways was written by legendary comic book author and LOST writer/producer Brian K. Vaughan, while the Hulu series is being created by The O.C. and Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Hulu has announced some big names for the cast of Marvel’s Runaways, including James Marsters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. Relative newcomers Gregg Sulkin, Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer and Allegra Acosta will star as the series’ team of ragtag coming-of-age teen heroes.
According to a press release issued at Hulu’s 2017 Upfront Presentation, Hulu is aiming the series at the younger segments of Marvel’s fanbase:
Marvel’s Runaways is the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe – their parents. The popular classic explores the younger side of the Marvel Universe in a coming of age, new action series that will premiere on Hulu in the winter.
Marvel’s Runaways marks Hulu’s first Marvel property and comes on the heels of competitor Netflix’s successful Marvel series Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and the upcoming The Defenders. With the announcement of Runaways, not to mention the critically-acclaimed series The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu could be signaling a move to try and directly challenge Netflix’s dominance of the original series market.
