The show is set to debut on April 26 on Hulu.
When the announcement was made that Hulu was adapting Margaret Atwood’s classic dystopian book “The Handmaid’s Tale” into a film, we expected it to be pretty dark. We got a look at just how dark and chilling it was going to be this week though, when Hulu finally released the first trailer.
The trailer features a woman saying that she “had another name, but it’s forbidden now. A lot of things are forbidden now,” as the camera shows rows of empty cribs in a hospital. The woman is played by Elizabeth Moss, and we later learn that she’s out to find the daughter that was taken from her. It means rebelling against nearly every aspect of the society and government she’s in, but she has no choice.
Not familiar with the book? It follows a fictional town named Gilead. The women here face widespread infertility. As a last-ditch attempt to repopulate the world, fertile women (called “handmaids”) are forced by the government into sexual slavery, helping wealthy families conceive.
“In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.”
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it’s already been adapted once – into a 1990 feature film with Natasha Richardson and Robert Duvall.
