Logan Lucky: Amazon Lands Streaming Rights to Steven Soderbergh’s Heist Comedy

Amazon has been adding some serious prestige flicks to its Prime Video catalog, thanks in large part to its ongoing co-distribution efforts through its Amazon Studios arm. Awards bait such as Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea has been shuffling into the Prime catalog several months after the theatrical runs are complete, and now Amazon has added another jewel to its crown. Logan Lucky, the latest film from acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh, will be a Prime exclusive in early 2018.

Logan Lucky is the first film Soderbergh, best known for flicks like Magic Mike and Out of Sight, has directed in four years, so it’s definitely got a little heat on it. According to Amazon’s press release, the heist comedy will hit the Prime Video catalog sometime in the first quarter of 2018.

Logan Lucky features an all-star cast including Channing Tatum (Magic Mike), Daniel Craig (Skyfall), Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Seth MacFarlane (Ted), Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby), and more. Logan Lucky was written by Rebecca Blunt, her first produced feature credit according to IMDb. Here’s the official synopsis:

Trying to reverse the infamous Logan Family Curse, brothers Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) and Clyde Logan (Adam Driver), along with sister Mellie Logan (Riley Keough) hook up with accomplice Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) to execute an impossibly elaborate robbery during the Coca-Cola 600, the biggest NASCAR race of the year.

In addition to the Logan Lucky deal, Amazon also signed an exclusive two-year first-look deal with Soderbergh’s distribution company, Fingerprint Releasing. Soderbergh himself gave a very Soderbergh-y quote in the press release:

The deal with Amazon is the final, crucial piece of the puzzle. The scale of this endeavor required a fearless, flexible co-conspirator, and Amazon has shown they have the appetite and vision to help us navigate these semi-unchartered waters. I’m both relieved and excited, which is one of my favorite states of being.

Logan Lucky opens in theaters on August 18, 2017.
