Mad Men Creator Matthew Weiner Signs on for New Amazon Prime Series

Amazon Studios just landed one hell of a jewel for their crown: Matthew Weiner’s first new show since his Emmy-winning Mad Men wrapped up its run won’t air on broadcast or cable — it’s coming to Amazon.

Deadline reports that Amazon and The Weinstein Company beat out several other bidders, committing $70 million and an eight-episode straight-to-series order. With a name as high-profile as Weiner’s, it’s not surprising this new, unnamed project will be skipping past the usual Amazon “pilot season” vetting and go straight to the starting gate. If the guy who made Mad Men wants to make a show with you, you open your damn wallet.

Weiner told Deadline:

In a time when there are so many options for entertainment, it’s been tremendous to see how Roy Price and Amazon have taken center stage by distinguishing themselves through bold choices. I am truly excited to have this opportunity to work with risk takers like them and Harvey and The Weinstein Company who have a proven, longstanding commitment to creative voices and innovation.

Details about the series are scarce this early on — we don’t even have a title yet. However, Deadline says their sources suggest that the series will be a “contemporary anthology set in multiple locations worldwide.” That obviously doesn’t rule out much, but the anthology angle is interesting. Will it be an episodic anthology like Black Mirror, where each episode tells a separate, self-contained story? Or will it be a seasonal anthology like True Detective, Fargo, or American Horror Story, where each season unspools one long story, which may or may not connect to the other seasons? Time will tell.

Either way, Deadline says Weiner will create, write, and executive produce the show, and is also expected to direct multiple episodes in the first season.

Weinstein Co. co-chairman Harvey Weinstein told Deadline:

We are thrilled to be working with Matthew Weiner on his new project. He is an incredible storyteller whose work on Mad Men elevated television and kick started a new era of innovative programming with compelling and addicting television content. We’re looking forward to creating the next big series with him.

Streaming Observer will bring you more details when they are available. Regardless, expect more Emmys in Amazon’s future.
