These days, it’s fairly clear that all media is either moving to streaming or has already gone all-in on streaming: music, television, movies, sports, even video games. As more and more people cut the cable in favor of streaming services, more and more types of content are suddenly finding themselves without a built-in audience and are scrambling to make the move to streaming. Case in point: streaming news.
While launching a free streaming news network may sound like a great way to lose money, the move makes sense given today’s shifting media and advertising landscape. News programs and networks rely on advertising just like any other TV program; as viewers move from linear TV to streaming, these news programs have to adapt like anyone else. Several major news networks have launched standalone streaming news networks in the last year, from Fox News’ Fox Nation to the CBSN ABC News Live, and Cheddar.
The latest huge media conglomerate to throw its name in the streaming news ring is NBC, who officially launched its new NBC News Now this week. NBC News President Noah Oppenheim officially announced the streaming network at this year’s SXSW festival, and the network went live today as of 3pm ET. For now, NBC News Now will only stream 3pm to 11pm ET Monday through Friday, but the network has plans to expand to 24 hours a day in the coming months.
NBC News Now is completely free and supported by ads. The network includes original programming and reporting as well as content from other NBC News networks like E! News and NBC Sports. When breaking news occurs, NBC News Now will cut to live coverage from NBC News.
