Back at the beginning of 2016, NBC announced a new streaming service that would offer animated and live action comedy for under $4 a month – Seeso. The experiment comes to and end this week though, as NBC has announced that Seeso is shutting down.
The news first came from a post on Seeso’s official Facebook page, but reports say the writing had been on the wall for some time. The service began laying off employees earlier this year and just a few weeks ago, news broke that Seeso was selling off their most popular shows.
“We’re writing to let you know that later this year, Seeso will be shutting its digital doors,” the post read. “Though we will be departing, much of our comedy will live on – and some of your favorite Seeso Originals have already found a new home.”
In a market that already had all-encompassing services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, it was already a tough road for Seeso. But as 2016 an 2017 saw the rise of streaming television services that offered 50 or more channels for under $30 a month, a nice service became an even tougher sell. Building a streaming service from the ground up is hard work, and it’s even harder when people have so many choices.
Several shows, including My Brother, My Brother and Me, HarmonQuest, Hidden America, and The Cyanide and Happiness Show will now be streaming on VRV. The post also referenced a show titled There’s … Johnny! that was set to premier later in August. Obviously, that’s not happening now.
It’s not clear when exactly streaming will stop. The Seeso announcement only said, “later this year,” but given how aggressively they’re seeking new homes for their shows, it’s likely that it won’t be long.
As for the rest of their content, Seeso said they’d make announcements on their Facebook page about where fans can find their favorite shows.
