Netflix released a press statement today announcing a thrilling new addition to its video library: support for Dolby Atmos high-definition surround sound. Now, in addition to ultra HD video, some Netflix users will be able to stream films with the most cutting-edge HD audio technology. Netflix’s upcoming fantasy/sci-fi film Okja will be the first film to feature the technology when it is released on July 30th. In addition to Okja, four more upcoming Netflix titles will feature Dolby Atmos sound mixes: BLAME! (July 28), Death Note (August 25), Bright (December 2017), and Wheelman (TBA 2017).
Netflix recommends an internet connection with a speed of at least 3 megabits per second in order to stream content with Dolby Atmos surround sound. Netflix subscribers using Microsoft’s Xbox One or Xbox One S and a Dolby Atmos enabled home theater system, TV, soundbar, or Atmos headphones will get the true Dolby Atmos experience. Netflix’s press release states that support is in development for 2017 LG OLED TVs which have built-in Atmos capabilities. Dolby Laboratories’ Atmos is a unique surround sound technology which allows audio to be mixed virtually anywhere within a 3D space. That means aside from the usual left, right, center, and rear locations found in 7.1 surround sound, Dolby Atmos can simulate sounds above or below audiences. The technology works best in theater environments, but films mixed for Dolby Atmos will still have a surprising level of clarity, definition, and 3D space when played on a home theater system with surround sound speakers.
