In what could be one of the most exciting announcements of the year so far – at least for a small segment nostalgic nerds who grew up in the ’80s – Netflix and the Jim Henson Company have signed a deal to produce a new series based on the cult classic film The Dark Crystal. The new series will take place before the events of The Dark Crystal and serve as a prequel to the events of the iconic fantasy film.
If you’re unfamiliar with The Dark Crystal, you should re-examine your life. Or, you know, just go watch it. The film features the puppetry magic of Jim Henson and Frank Oz and while marketed as a family film, has a much darker tone than most Henson productions. The plot centers around a race of creatures known as Gelflings who seek to restore balance to their world by seeking a lost magic gem.
The puppets in The Dark Crystal are unlike any of Henson’s other projects and the tone of the film can be unsettling at times. If you’re a fan of fantasy, puppetry, or just weird cinema in general, it’s definitely worth a watch.
The new series will be called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and will be produced by the Jim Henson Company under the leadership of Lisa Henson, CEO of the Jim Henson Company and Jim Henson’s daughter. Director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) will serve as executive producer and direct the series. In a Netflix press release, Lisa Henson says that Netflix is the perfect venue to carry on her father’s legacy through this new series:
Netflix has a deep respect for my father’s original work and the many people it inspired. They are the perfect partners to create this next epic chapter in The Dark Crystal story for new fans and the loyal fans who have waited so long for more adventures from this world.
No date has been set for the series’ release, but production is slated to begin in Fall 2017.
