Netflix is bringing back the internet’s favorite talking horse, Bojack Horseman, for a fourth season. The announcement was made via the series’ official Twitter account, which posted a strange image of skywriting partially obscured by a blurry hand. In the background between the hand’s fingers, the words “all new episodes September 8.” True to the show’s wacky humor, the account’s following tweet reads “how do i make a picture on the internet go away” (sic), seemingly in relation to the announcement image.
Bojack Horseman has been described as an “adult animated sitcom” and has been called “one of the funniest and most heartbreaking shows on television” by Rotten Tomatoes critics. Will Arnett stars as the series’ title character, BoJack Horseman, while the supporting cast boasts some of the biggest names in comedy including Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Thompkins, and Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame. Bojack Horseman is the debut of newcomer Raphael Bob-Waksberg, who created the series and acts as showrunner.
Reviews of the first season of Bojack Horseman were generally mixed, but the series seems to have found its comedic stride by season two. The second and third seasons boast an impressive “100% fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and earned Bojack Horseman a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Animated Series in 2016 and a Writers Guild of America Award for Animation in 2017.
The release date of season four of Bojack Horseman comes on the heels of several other announcements and releases of Netflix animated series. Netflix released the new Castlevania animated series on July 7, shortly after it was made public that the streaming service will produce an Assassin’s Creed anime series. Earlier this year, Netflix announced its first full-length animated feature starring Channing Tatum which will explore the founding of America. Could Netflix be developing its own niche in the streaming world with all of these animated series?
