Netflix Casts Charlie Hunnam, Mark Wahlberg for ‘Triple Frontier’

Netflix keeps expanding its list of A-list actors, directors, and writers who are producing films for the big red streaming giant. Many filmmakers and actors have cited the creative freedom Netflix offers as the main reason why they’re jumping ship (at least part of the time) from Hollywood to streaming studios. While the internet is still abuzz with the new fervor resulting from Netflix’s Comic Con news, Netflix is busy casting one of their most under-the-radar upcoming releases Triple Frontier, an action/thriller featuring a star-studded ensemble cast of some of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Triple Frontier is set in the region of the same name where corners of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil all converge. The area is known as somewhat of a haven for organized crime and guerilla activity, and police and military presence is scant at best. There have even been numerous reports of terrorist organizations setting up training camps in the region. Plot details about the film are still scarce, but it has been described as an “action-adventure story set in the border zone” between the three countries. Triple Frontier is directed by J.C. Chandor (All is Lost) and written by Chandor and Mark Boal, known for writing military dramas such Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker.

Several big names are already slated to star to Triple Frontier when the $70 million production begins filming in August 2017; Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davis), and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) are all already attached. However, there has been some serious shuffling of the film’s main starring role. Ben Affleck (Gigli) was attached, but exited the production just last week in order to spend time with family. The film has instead shifted its casting efforts to Mark Wahlberg (Transformers: The Last Knight) to replace Affleck. Action stars Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) likewise previously dropped out of production just as the film inched towards photography.

Triple Frontier is slated for a 2019 release exclusively on Netflix, but given the various delays its production has faced, it could likely be a lot later.
