Netflix has dropped the first trailer for the Israeli drama Sand Storm, the film that served as Israel’s entry in this year’s Oscars.
Sand Storm is set against the backdrop celebration that’s underway in a small Bedouin village in South Israel. A woman finds herself tasked with hosting her husband’s wedding to his second (much younger) wife, and during the festivities, she find that her oldest daughter is involved with a boy from her university — something that’s strictly forbidden and would bring shame to the family. She tried to cope with her own indignity and contain her daughter at the same time, but she finds that it’s not easy when the daughter wants her own life.
The film has been fairly critically acclaimed, nabbing six Ophir Awards (the Israeli version of the Oscars), including two big ones for Best Film and Best Director, and won the “World Cinema Grand Jury” prize at this year’s Sundance. The European Film Awards are next week, so the film’s awards tally should continue to grow.
Sand Storm will almost certainly be on the Oscar short list for Best Foreign Language film, and it’s expected to win it by many accounts.
The film is set to debut on Netflix on Dec. 15, but you can get an early peek by checking out the trailer below.
