Netflix has officially given the green light to “Atypical,” a coming of age sitcom that follows an 18 year old on the autism spectrum while he searches for love and independence.
The dark comedy series shows how his family struggles with his difficulties just as much as he does, and asks the question what it even really means to be normal. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keir Gilchrist and Michael Rapaport will play the leads.
From The Goldbergs writer/co-executive producer Robia Rashid and director/executive producer Seth Gordon, the show will be the second TV series in recent months to focus on a family with a special needs member (behind ABC’s “Speechless” that has a teen with cerebral palsy).
“Atypical” is just another in a long line of original shows from the streaming service, with “Santa Clarita Diet” )starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant) and “Friends From College” (with Keegan-Michael Key and Fred Savage) due soon.
