Netflix Lands Tracy Morgan Stand-Up Special

One area Netflix doesn’t always get enough credit for is their solid line-up of stand-up comedy. At any given time, they’ve got a diverse array of newer and older specials, and rarely does a month go by that doesn’t see a couple of new additions to the Netflix comedy catalog. Some of those announcements have recently included the biggest names in the industry, and now Netflix has another jewel for its crown: they’ll be premiering a new special from 30 Rock‘s Tracy Morgan later this spring.

Tracy Morgan’s Staying Alive will debut on Netflix on May 16. The special was filmed at New Jersey’s landmark Count Basie Theatre and finds the comic back in the spotlight after a near-fatal traffic accident back in 2014. With a title like Staying Alive, it’s no surprise that Morgan will delve into that incident in the special, as well as exploring his long road to recovery, which included a traumatic brain injury and even having to learn how to walk again. He also apparently fell for his physical therapist, because of course he did. Still, mortality is a bit heavier than Morgan’s standard subject matter, so it should be interesting to see how his brush with death has changed his perspective and style.

This is just the latest in a string of major comedy “gets” for Netflix of late. They stole both Jerry Seinfeld and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee away from Crackle. They’ve also got specials in the works from Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and Amy Schumer. Netflix has become a go-to destination for standup much like HBO was back in the day. Except now it’s all available with the touch of a button, which is a boon for comedy fans and bored stoners the world over.

Morgan is set to return to series television in an upcoming TBS comedy series developed by Key & Peele‘s Jordan Peele.
