Netflix Offers First Look at New Animated Comedy ‘Big Mouth’

Netflix might have recently lost Futurama, but that hasn’t stopped it from blazing ahead by launching a barrage of original animated series. The streaming giant recently signed a massive package of anime titles including a new Godzilla film, brought in legendary The Simpsons creator Matt Groening for a new series, and scored a huge hit with their Castlevania adaptation. Netflix keeps the animation train rolling this week with the release of a pair of teaser trailers for Big Mouth, the new animated series from Nick Kroll.

Big Mouth is a fictionalized depiction of Kroll’s awkward adolescent years. The series centers around a group of young teenagers as they begin experiencing the horrifying changes associated with puberty. To help depict the terror of adolescence, the series features a pair of characters known as the Hormone Monster and Hormone Monstress, demonic creatures which appear out of nowhere to terrorize the teen characters by pushing them to give in to their hormone-induced urges.

The series features voice acting by well-known comedians like Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph, Jenny Slate, and John Mulaney, while Family Guy writer Andrew Goldberg serves as co-creator alongside Kroll.

Kroll is most well-known for his roles on the FX fantasy football series The League and his Comedy Central sketch comedy series Kroll Show, but Kroll has also appeared in several recent high-profile comedy films including Sausage Party, I Love You Man, and Dinner for Schmucks.

Netflix’s closest competitor Hulu might have picked up a host of 20th Century Fox animated titles, but none of those is exclusive to Hulu. With the announcement of Big Mouth and other new animated titles, Netflix is clearly choosing a different path when it comes to animation by opting for original rather than licensed titles.

Big Mouth premieres for streaming exclusively on Netflix on September 29.
