Netflix slipped this one under the radar. The streaming service released a clip today for the soon-to-be released science fiction film What Happened to Monday, a new original production which has received little attention. The film stars Swedish actress Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as seven different characters – septuplets, actually. The seven sisters live in a dystopian future in which overpopulation has led to a worldwide one-child policy. In order to avoid detection from the malevolent Child Allocation Bureau, the seven sisters are forced to conceal their identities and live as if they are all one person.

The two-minute clip shows What Happened to Monday to be a dark, action-packed thriller full of quick cuts, gun fights, and choreographed fight scenes. Rapace’s seven characters all feature a somewhat distinct look, giving the actress a chance to show off her physical acting prowess by making each one of the seven sisters look and ‘feel’ like a completely unique person.

Despite being relatively under-hyped, the film boasts some A-list talent. Willem Dafoe and Glenn Close co-star, and was directed by Finnish filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters). Early reviews haven’t been too kind on the film, though. While most reviewers have praised its original concept, most critics have found the film underwhelming.

Collider’s Matt Goldberg writes that What Happened to Monday “never lives up to its promising start, and by the end it becomes an utter chore.” Darren Franich at Entertainment Weekly, meanwhile, feels the film “meanders too much, never quite loses its layer of gray-grim seriousness, gets talky when you want it to get funky.” Still, any original science fiction offering is welcome in my book; Netflix’s sci-fi offerings have been severely thinned-out as of late, filling up with CGI-bloated superhero movies rather than the thought-provoking forward-looking tales science fiction is known for.

What Happened to Monday debuts Friday, August 17th exclusively on Netflix. Give it a watch and see for yourself.
