Netflix Orders New Matt Groening Animated Comedy ‘Disenchantment’

Netflix and its customers are still reeling from the loss of beloved science fiction/comedy series Futurama which left Netflix in July 2017, finding a new home on Netflix’s biggest rival Hulu. Now, Netflix seems poised to recover at least some of its lost Futurama fans by ordering a brand new animated series from Matt Groening, the creative mind behind The Simpsons and Futurama.

Groening’s new series is called Disenchantment and will premiere with ten episodes on Netflix. Disenchantment is a dark take on typical fairy tale/fantasy stories, depicting a crumbling medieval kingdom led by an alcoholic princess Bean and her sardonic magical companions. In a Netflix press release, Groening says the series will “be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”

Groening and Futurama veteran Josh Weinstein will produce the series for Netflix, while Rough Draft Studios (Futurama) will animate the series. Many voice actors who worked on Futurama will return to work again with Groening on the new series, including John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille and David Herman. Thanks to the wealth of Futurama veterans that will return for Disenchantment, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Content Cindy Holland says Disenchantment will continue Groening’s award-winning tradition of groundbreaking animated comedy:

Matt Groening’s brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn’t be happier to work with him on Disenchantment. The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans.

Disenchantment could be just the thing to help Netflix compete with Hulu’s animation offerings. Hulu has somewhat cornered the market on adult animated sitcoms lately, recently, adding Bob’s Burgers, American Dad!, The Cleveland Show and more in addition to hits like South Park, Rick & Morty, Adventure Time, Family Guy, Archer and The Simpsons. While Hulu has clearly cornered the market on adult animated series, Netflix is home to original animated series Bojack Horseman and has added a handful of original animated series like Castlevania as well as ordering its first animated feature film.

Could Disenchantment help lessen the blow of losing Futurama for Netflix subscribers? Unfortunately, it will be next year before we find out. Disenchantment will debut with ten episodes in 2018.
