Netflix is by far the leading name in streaming video, so this should come as no surprise, but a recent analysis revealed that Netflix’s originals shows are crushing Hulu and Amazon originals in popularity. Since their original shows certainly aren’t cheap, this is nothing but good news for Netflix
Analytics company Parrot Analytics tracked a number of factors like file sharing, social media chatter, and streaming data (when it was available), and found that Stranger Things from Netflix was 2016’s most popular original show in the US from one of the major streaming providers.
No real shock there, as Stranger Things was a runaway smash hit for Netflix. The real surprise though was the fact that the next 10 spots also belonged to Netflix, with Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle in the 12 spot followed by 11.22.63 from Hulu.
The top 10 original streaming shows in popularity were:
- Stranger Things
- Orange Is the New Black
- The Get Down
- Narcos
- Marco Polo
- House of Cards
- Fuller House
- BoJack Horseman
- Marvel’s Jessica Jones
- Bloodline
With Sense8 and Longmire in the number 14 and 15 spots, that means Netflix holds 13 of the top 15 spots – a pretty dominating showing.
Parrot also measured other markets, and Stranger Things led in every single one there as well, except for Russia, which has an affinity for Bojack Horseman for some reason.
When syndicated shows are figured in though, things play out much differently. AMC’s The Walking Dead took the first spot by a wide margin, with HBO’s Game of Thrones and Westworld up next. Netflix doesn’t appear on the syndicated list until Black Mirror in 24th place.
