Netflix has been dominating the headlines coming from this year’s San Diego Comic Con with its massive, highly anticipated Stranger Things panel in the coveted Hall H at Comic Con as well as with new trailers for upcoming films like the fantasy/cop buddy movie Bright starring Will Smith. Perhaps Netflix’s biggest announcement, however – at least for a subset of the geek world – was the release of a new The Defenders trailer for the upcoming Marvel series set to debut later this year.
The Defenders is an ensemble superhero series that is set to serve as a dark, gritty alternative to the colorful, humorous tone of Marvel’s Avengers films. The Defenders brings together Netflix’s many fan-favorite Marvel series including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist under one title as the heroes/anti-heroes must band together to fight a shadowy criminal organization. In addition to the four stars of the individual Netflix Marvel series, Scott Glenn, Rosario Dawson, and Carrie-Anne Moss will return to reprise their guest roles from the individual Netflix Marvel series, while Jon Bernthal will make a cameo role as the gun-toting Marvel vigilante The Punisher.
The new Defenders trailer offers a deeper look at Sigourney Weaver as Alexandra, the mastermind of an ancient criminal organization bent on reclaiming New York City for their own uses. The trailer shows the four heroes wondering how they might possibly stop such a powerful enemy as the Daredevil ally and mentor Stick (Scott Glenn) assures them that “the only thing keeping Manhattan from crumbling to a pile of dust is the four of you.” Throughout the Defenders trailer, highly choreographed fight scenes show The Defenders to be action-packed and full of exquisitely filmed action sequences.
The Defenders will debut exclusively on Netflix on August 18, 2017. There’s still plenty of time to catch up on Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil in the meantime. Get bingeing, Marvel fans.
