Netflix appears to be banking hard on millennial nostalgia, rolling out several series which capitalize on aging twenty- and thirty-somethings’ longing for their much simpler childhoods. Sitcom reboot Fuller House was recently renewed for a third season, while the upcoming retro-game-spinoff Carmen Sandiego animated series is already generating some significant buzz. Aging gamers received more much-appreciated news when Netflix announced its upcoming Castlevania series inspired by the long-standing vampire hunting video game franchise of the same name. A teaser trailer was released last month, generating even more anticipation for the upcoming series. Now, Netflix has revealed the voice cast for the upcoming series, and Castlevania fans couldn’t be more delighted.
The announcement was made through a video posted to YouTube by Castlevania producer Adi Shankar. Many of the voice actors Netflix announced have some serious science-fiction cred behind them on their IMDB pages. Castlevania‘s protagonist, Trevor Belmont, will be voiced by Rhichard Armitage, best known for his role as Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy of films. James Callis, well known in sci-fi circles for his role on Battlestar Galactica as Dr. Gaius Baltar, has been cast as Alucard, a half human, half vampire known as a dhampir. Character actor Matt Frewer, who played the 1980s cyberpunk icon Max Headroom and Dr. Aldous Leekie on Orphan Black, has been cast to voice a new character called “the Bishop.” Rounding out the star-studded cast is Emily Swallow of Supernatural fame, who will play Lisa Tepes, the human wife of Dracula and Alucard’s mother.
The first season of Castlevania will be split into two halves, following the inexplicable trend many of today’s television series have adopted. Four thirty-minute episodes of Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 will premiere on Netflix on July 7, while Season 1, Part 2 is set to be released sometime in 2018.
