Netflix’s Frontier Trailer Unleashes Jason Momoa and a Tomahawk

Netflix has an ax to grind with its latest original series…or rather, a tomahawk. The period drama Frontier debuts on the streaming service on January 20, and the show’s latest trailer is chock full of furs and furious violence.

Co-created by Brad Peyton (San Andreas), Frontier stars Game of Thrones‘ Jason Momoa as a half-Irish, half-Native American outlaw named Declan Harp. In between spurring heavy breathing in a significant portion of the viewing audience, Momoa’s Harp hacking away at the Hudson’s Bay Company’s monopoly on the North American fur trade in the late 18th century. And, from the looks of it, pretty much anybody else who gets in his way. Check out the latest trailer for Netflix’s Frontier.

Frontier is actually a co-production between Netflix and Discovery Channel Canada. It premiered in Canada late last year and received generally good reviews. Now it’s one of two major original series Netflix is debuting this month. (The other is Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.) If you think it looks like your cup of tea, good news — it’s already been renewed for a second season.

Netflix has had a hit-or-miss track record with ambitious period pieces thus far. Marco Polo was critically lambasted and won’t be returning for a third season. On the other hand, The Crown, Netflix’s big-budget look at 20th century British royalty, is currently rocking an impressive 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Frontier definitely doesn’t look as “respectable” as The Crown, but it does look like a good time for anyone looking for an edgy historical drama with a bit of the old ultraviolence thrown in for good measure.

Frontier‘s six-episode first season will hit Netflix on Friday, January 20. In the mean time, you can get your Netflix Momoa fix by streaming his Sundance TV series Red Road.
