Adam Sandler hasn’t really been funny since the 1990s, so maybe that bodes well for his new Netflix original film, Sandy Wexler. Sandler’s latest comedy is set back in the original Clinton era, with Sandler playing a struggling Hollywood talent agent who starts crushing on his latest would-be celebrity discovery.
There isn’t a full trailer available yet, but Netflix has released a short teaser giving a first look at Sandler in Sandy Wexler. Unlike in his previous Netflix original, The Do-Over, Sandler seems to be back to doing some of the goofy character work that helped define his early career. Sandy Wexler was directed by Steve Brill, the same dude who helmed Sandler’s previous Netflix outing, The Do-Over. The cast includes a mix of familiar faces and Sandler regulars: Jennifer Hudson plays Sandy’s crush/client, alongside Kevin James, Terry Crews, Lamorne Morris, Nick Swardson, Jane Seymour, Carl Weathers, and Arsenio Hall. Oh, and Rob Schneider, of course, because when is he not in Sandler’s movies?

The film follows Sandy Wexler (Adam Sandler), a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s, who diligently represents a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His single-minded devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Academy Award(r) and Grammy(r) winner Jennifer Hudson), a tremendously talented singer who he discovers at an amusement park.
Sandy Wexler is the latest project birthed from Sandler’s multi-picture deal with Netflix. So far the results have been less than stellar, gifting Netflix viewers with the dueling duds that were The Ridiculous 6 and The Do-Over. On a related note, I wished I could get a do-over after I sat through The Do-Over.
