In the cult hit ’80s series, one lone time traveler leaped from one body to the next, one time to the next, striving to set right what once went wrong. In Netflix’s upcoming series Travelers…it’s gonna take more than one guy to fix this mess.
Travelers is a Canadian time travel series that originally debuted on the Showcase network up north this past October. (Showcase previously aired the excellent and underrated Continuum, also available on Netflix.) Travelers stars Will and Grace’s Eric McCormack as an FBI agent whose body is essentially hijacked by an intelligence from a distant and doomed future. He’s not alone, and they have a plan to save the world and prevent their inhospitable timeline from ever having existed. Check out the trailer for Travelers.
In addition to McCormack, Travelers stars Mackenzie Porter, Patrick Gilmore, Jared Paul Abrahamson, Nesta Marlee Cooper, and Reilly Dolman. The series is the brainchild of Brad Wright, co-creator of the Stargate TV franchise and a veteran of shows such as The Outer Limits and Highlander. He’s got nerd cred that goes way back, is what we’re saying, so we’re looking forward to checking out Travelers. Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix.
Hundreds of years from now, the last surviving humans discover the means of sending consciousness back through time, directly into people in the 21st century. These “travelers” assume the lives of seemingly random people, while secretly working as teams to perform missions in order to save humanity from a terrible future. These travelers are: FBI Special Agent Grant MacLaren (Eric McCormack), the team’s leader; Marcy (Mackenzie Porter), a young, intellectually disabled woman in the care of her social worker, David (Patrick Gilmore); Trevor (Jared Paul Abrahamson), a high school quarterback; Carly (Nesta Marlee Cooper), a single mom in an abusive relationship; and Philip (Reilly Dolman), a heroin-addicted college student. Armed only with their knowledge of history and an archive of social media profiles, the travelers discover that 21st century lives and relationships are as much a challenge as their high-stakes missions.
Travelers is just the latest intriguing genre offering from Netflix in a year that’s already included Luke Cage, Stranger Things, The OA, and the impending return of Sense8 (with a Christmas special, no less!). When you add in-development projects like Lost in Space and Altered Carbon, Netflix’s future looks very bright indeed for fans of sci-fi-tinged entertainment.
Travelers will premiere on Netflix on December 23.
