One of the most popular after shows is making some major changes. It’s still going to exist, but it’s getting a new name and a new home. Most importantly, it’s opening up to a lot more fans.
It’s no secret that fans love talking about Game of Thrones. It’s easily one of the most popular social media shows, with the hashtag #gameofthrones one of the most popular on the year for Twitter. And in an attempt to build on that popularity, fans will soon take to Twitter for official discussion.
Previously, the official after show After the Thrones aired only on HBO GO. Starting next season, the show will be called Talk the Thrones, and will be live streamed exclusively on Twitter. That’s great news for fans, who won’t have to pay for a premium subscription to take part in discussion.
The show moves to Twitter as part of a deal with Bill Simmons’ The Ringer, and will be shown at the show’s Twitter account, @ringer, as well as their Periscope page.
“We love Game of Thrones and we love the way Twitter is thinking about content right now, so we jumped at the chance to blow out our Thrones show into an interactive multimedia experience — something that reacts immediately to what just happened, almost like a post game show in sports. Nobody is equipped to do that better than Twitter,” said Simmons.
This move comes as Twitter is making a major push into streaming content and live video. The company recently secured the rights to MLB games, a while they lost their Thursday Night Football game, they did pick up the rights to other live NFL content.
Twitter’s involvement may be short lived though. Season 7 of GoT premiers July 17, at which point there will be only two abbreviated seasons left.
