Netflix’s ‘Medici: Masters of Florence’ Debuts With Dustin Hoffman

When writer and producer Frank Spotnitz was asked about his “dream casting” for the new Netflix original Medici: Masters of Florence, one name came to mind – Dustin Hoffman. One short phone call later, and Spotnitz had his man.

Maybe it was the show’s material (a generation of Italy’s “House of Medici” banking family), maybe it was the allure of a couple of weeks working in Tuscany. Either way, Hoffman was on board, and you can catch Medici: Masters of Florence on Netflix starting December 9. Still on the fence? Watch the show’s trailer below to get a feel for what’s to come.

Dustin Hoffman stars as family patriarch Giovanni di Bicci de Medici, and Richard Madden (who you know as Robb Stark from Game of Thrones) stars alongside Stuart Martin as his Givanni’s sons, Cosimo and Lorenzo. The Medicis rise to political (and later royal) power thanks to their bank, which was the largest in Europe. The Medici family would go on to begin the Italian Renaissance, produce multiple Popes, and be one of the most influential names in Europe for many years.

Executive producer Frank Spotnitz previously worked on The Man in The High Castle and The X-Files, so you have an idea of what sort of style you can expect. If you’re looking for a new show to stream over the Christmas holidays, this one needs to be on your short list.
