NFL & Yahoo partnership will let you virtually watch football with friends for free

Since there won’t be any fans at most NFL games (in the beginning at least), the NFL has partnered with Yahoo to at least allow for a little bit of communal viewing.

Similar to the “watch party” features that both Amazon Prime and Hulu have rolled out this year, this new option lets people invite up to three other viewers to watch a synchronized livestream. And perhaps best of all, it’s totally free.

The feature is available through the Yahoo Sports app, which will stream all local and nationally televised NFL games on any smartphone or tablet. It’s not available on any streaming player though, so you won’t be able to watch on a television unless you have a workaround. Verizon is hosting the experience, but you don’t need to be a Verizon customer to participate.

This option adds a little more to the watch party experience other streaming services have though. Aside from the live action on the screen, you’ll be able to see the faces of your fellow viewers below, making for a Zoom-like experience most people are used to these days. Compared to other services that only offer a text chat, it’s a definite upgrade, and one that’s perfect for live sports.
