Philo Raises Prices and Adds More Channels

When Philo first launched in 2009, things were much simpler in the streaming television world. Flash forward to 2019, and the streaming market has become like the Wild West, with newcomers appearing on the scene every day to try and carve out their own piece of the market before it gets to crowded. Due to all of that competition, streaming services have been raising prices across the board lately, and Philo has finally followed suit this week by increasing its monthly subscription price by 25%. Will subscribers stay aboard?

For years, Philo has stood out by being one of the cheapest cable replacements around, offering dozens of channels for just $16/month. In a statement posted this week, Philo CEO Andrew McCollum explained that starting May 6, that base price will increase to $20 for new subscribers. Existing subscribers will be allowed to keep the existing packages and pricing they currently have.

In McCollum’s press release, the Philo CEO explains that his company has attempted to keep their prices the same for the last 18 months but due to ever-rising operating costs, a price hike was inevitable. “When we looked at all of the costs of operating Philo—which increase over time—consolidating into a single $20 package was the best way for us to maintain the same offering we have today without raising prices for everyone, or having to cut back in places we strive to excel, like our customer support,” McCollum says.

At the new price of $20/month, Philo is still a great deal for those looking to cut down on their channel list and monthly bills. The basic $20 Philo package now offers 58 channels including AMC, Food Network, Nickelodeon, Discovery, Comedy Central, and even specialty channels like MTV Live, BET Her, Nicktoons, Logo, Cooking Channel, Destination America, Discovery Family Channel, and Discovery Life Channel.
