Pluto TV Launching Free Video-on-Demand Service

In the world of streaming video services, the visibility of the big name companies, not to mention their budgets, means that some of the smaller startups get overlooked. It seems ambitious newcomer Pluto TV looks to change that and build some name recognition of its own thanks to a recent announcement that could put Pluto TV firmly on the streaming service map.

Pluto TV launched in 2014 and immediately set itself apart from most other streaming services in that it hosts channels which stream scheduled linear programming much like a traditional cable service. Pluto TV currently boasts over 5 million monthly visitors, but this latest announcement could potentially draw in many more. According to a Pluto TV press release, the streaming service has added an extensive catalog of movies and television series that will stream in a video-on-demand (VOD) format:

Exercise your freedom of choice to its full potential with Pluto TV’s new Video on Demand offer. As if you didn’t have enough to choose from with Pluto TV’s 100+ channels of curated programming, we now have 1000’s of hit movies and binge-worthy TV shows ready to pick from whenever you want. Like everything else on Pluto TV, Video on Demand is completely free! Even better? You can stream them wherever you want.

The VOD service has already signed licensing agreements with some major studios including Lionsgate, Warner Brothers, and MGM. According to a Variety exclusive, some of the launch titles include Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Silence of the Lambs, The Usual Suspects, Vanilla Sky, and even every episode of ALF. Hear that, Netflix? Better watch your back. You might have Stranger Things, but you don’t have ALF.

Pluto TV’s new video-on-demand service is available for streaming on Roku devices, Apple TV, and Pluto TV’s iOS and Android apps.
