Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is hitting the road and heading to Netflix. Starting in late 2017, 24 new episodes of the show will air exclusively on Netflix, along with two new exclusive standup specials.
The mobile talk show debuted on Sony’s streaming service Crackle, and features Seinfeld simply riding in various cars (often classic vehicles) chatting with comedians and celebrities like Norm MacDonald, Kristen Wiig, Lorne Michaels, Steve Martin, Steven Colbert, Jim Carrey, and even President Barack Obama. Seinfeld’s working relationship with Sony is one that extends all the way back to his first TV show, Seinfeld.
Crackle never really gained traction though, and is rarely mentioned among the “big names” in streaming like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, so Seinfeld saw this as an opportunity for a change in scenery.
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee has earned three Emmy nominations, including one for variety talk show, something rare for a streaming show.
Also a part of this deal are the nearly 60 episodes of the show already produced for Crackle.
Netflix has been investing very heavily in original standup comedy in recent months, signing deals with Amy Schumer, Dana Carvey, Patton Oswalt, and Chris Rock among others.
