This world is overrun with crime, corruption, and general nastiness. It’s got a fever, and the only prescription is seven feet of two-fisted, blue-suited justice. We’re talking, of course, about The Tick.
The first season of Amazon’s new superhero comedy is set to debut next month, and the streaming giant has released a new trailer to serve notice to evildoers that their time is almost up. Based on Ben Edlund’s cult classic comic-book series, The Tick stars Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead) as the titular hero, a good-natured, dim-witted, nigh-invulnerable doofus who’s made it his life’s work to stomp out evil wherever it may raise its slimy head. Unfortunately, that stomping often involves quite a lot of collateral damage. Just ask Arthur (Griffin Newman), an ordinary schlub whom The Tick has decided is sidekick material — whether he’s interested in crimefighting or not. Here’s the latest trailer.
This isn’t The Tick‘s first attempt to conquer Hollywood. The Big Blue hero previously spawned both a cartoon and a short-lived Fox sitcom starring Patrick Warburton. And while this version looks great, I have to admit that they’ll be hard pressed to better the casting of Warburton, who was pretty much born for the role, even if his suit wasn’t as cool as Serafinowicz’s. Still, this incarnation of The Tick has original comic creator Ben Edlund at the helm, and the pilot was directed by the legendary Wally Pfister himself. He’s a dude who knows a thing or two about superhero stories, having served as director of photography on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Also keep your eyes peeled for Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), buried beneath a shit-ton of makeup as a villain named The Terror.
With comic-book adaptations continuing to dominate both the big and small screens, this is the perfect time for a show like The Tick to come along and take them all down a peg. Spoon!
The Tick premieres August 25. You can stream the pilot episode right now on Amazon Prime.
