Voltron: Legendary Defender Returns For Third Season on Netflix

If you’re a fan of the animated show Voltron: Legendary Defender, there’s good news! The series is coming back to Netflix for its third season, and it’s bringing more content from season two. The first two seasons were such a hit that a third season seemed inevitable, but it’s still good to hear the news officially.

The announcement actually came at the annual New York Toy Fair, where Netflix was showing off a new line of Voltron toys (following through on their commitment to bring more merchandise from their shows to store shelves). At NY Toy Fair, it was revealed that the third season of Voltron: Legendary Defender would be released in September of 2017 with 13 new episodes. It was also announced that before the third season, “additional content” from season two would be released, along with 10 episodes of “classic” content.

But perhaps even more interesting was the note that the series has a 78 episode commitment from Netflix. That means Voltron: Legendary Defender should have at least six more seasons on Netflix. It’s rare for a show from Netflix to get such a long commitment, so it’ll be interesting to see where the show’s producers take the show since they have so much flexibility.

Voltron: Legendary Defender is a retelling of the classic original Voltron: Defender of the Universe series that ran back in 1984 and spawned video games, comics, and movies. It tells the story of five kids who form “the greatest weapon ever known” to order to protect innocent civilians across their galaxy.

The first season of Voltron: Legendary Defender was released on Netflix in June 2016 with a pretty strong cast of voice actors. The series immediately found success, and hasn’t really slowed down since.
