Amazon’s ‘Z: The Beginning of Everything’ Lands Second Season

Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald’s lived a life abundant in many things: glamour, drama, romance, and, unfortunately, tragedy. There’s certainly no shortage of narrative fodder for Amazon’s original series Z: The Beginning of Everything to explore…and now it will get the chance to dive even deeper. Amazon has picked up the Fitzgerald biopic for a second season.

Z: The Beginning of Everything was co-created by Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin (The Killing), debuting as part of Amazon’s Pilot Season back in 2015. Christina Ricci stars as Zelda, opposite David Hoflin as F. Scott Fitzgerald and David Strathairn as Zelda’s father, Judge Anthony Sayre. The show begins in Zelda’s early life, when she meets Scott as a still-unpublished writer, and traces their turbulent lives through good times and bad, as they became twin icons of the Jazz Age and Zelda becomes hailed as “the first Flapper.”

Ricci also serves as an executive producer on the series.

Speaking at Deadline’s AwardsLine panel shortly after word of the renewal broke, Ricci told Deadline, We’re truly thrilled. It’s such a rich history and their story is so fascinating. It should be a pretty exciting second season.” While season 2 is still in the very early stages, Ricci added that “Certainly, we’re going to get more into the complexities of their marriage, and what led to [Zelda’s] breakdown.”

Z: The Beginning of Everything has received decent reviews during its first season. It’s currently sitting at 69% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score at a more forgiving 88%.

The Beginning of Everything isn’t Amazon Prime’s only foray into the life and works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. In June 2016, Amazon debuted a pilot based on Fitzgerald’s posthumously published final book, The Last Tycoon. Directed by Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) and starring Matt Bomer and Kelsey Grammar, The Last Tycoon was ordered to series by Amazon shortly after its pilot premiere.

We’ll keep you updated as more news about season 2 becomes available. In the meantime, the first season of Z: The Beginning of Everything is available streaming on Amazon Prime.
