Mohu Airwave Review 2019: Is It Worth It?

As more and more people look for alternatives to pricey cable TV packages, a number of products and services have cropped up to fill the entertainment void. Mohu is a brand that many cord cutters will recognize. Their innovative, aesthetically pleasing high definition TV antennas almost single-handedly reminded consumers that free television was broadcast over the airwaves. As imitators have sprung up, Mohu has had to innovate once again, resulting in the Mohu Airwave.

The Mohu Airwave is a device that integrates your over-the-air (OTA) channels to your set top box, phone or tablet. Say goodbye to switching inputs on your TV. With the Mohu Airwave, OTA channels like ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and more will be right alongside Internet video streaming service like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Mohu Airwave Review at a Glance

Cutting the cord can save you tons of money, but it can also be somewhat inconvenient. Watching content from a variety of streaming services and an HDTV antenna often requires the use of multiple remotes and flicking back and forth between inputs on your TV. Fortunately, the Mohu Airwave seeks to deliver a streamlined television watching experience similar to that of cable.

The Mohu Airwave is a device that combines an HDTV antenna with a streaming device called a Power Bridge. The antenna grabs OTA broadcasts and the Power Bridge delivers them wirelessly to the streaming box connected to your TV, or even a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet. The Mohu Airwave is able to do this by using your existing home Wi-Fi network.

This allows OTA content to live right alongside all of your favorite streaming services, making all of your entertainment available in a single spot. In addition, the Mohu Airwave features a channel guide that not only provides you with information about what’s on at the moment, but also allows users to see what’s on 14-days in advance.

Mohu Airwave Range and Signal Strength

Mohu Airwave signal strengthThe Mohu Airwave is available in three different models: Airwave Basic, Airwave Plus and Airwave Premium. The only real difference between them is which HDTV antenna comes as a pack-in. The Airwave Basic comes with a standard 30 mile antenna. The Airwave Plus has an antenna range of 40 miles. Finally the Airwave Premium has an antenna that can pull OTA broadcasts from up to 70 miles away. To find out how far away you are from a broadcast tower, head to Antennas Direct.

Signal strength is going to depend on a number of different factors; namely how far you are from a broadcast tower and if there are any obstructions that can interfere with the signal. You may have to experiment with the placement of the antenna in order to get the best reception. Luckily, this is much easier to do since the antenna is no longer tethered to your TV via a coaxial cable.

Furthermore, since the Airwave takes the channels received by the antenna and transmits them wirelessly via your home Wi-Fi network, the performance of the Mohu Airwave will greatly depend on your home network. Your Wi-Fi network can be negatively affected by a variety of factors including interference from other electronics, the range of your Internet router and obstructions to the signal like floors and walls. Unfortunately, these things can impede the performance of the Mohu Airwave. Common problems are video buffering or encountering a delay when changing channels.

Mohu Airwave Installation

The Mohu Airwave has two components, the HD antenna and the Airwave Power Bridge. The antenna receives all of the OTA broadcasts and the Power Bridge is the device that streams those channels to your streaming device via your home Wi-Fi.

You can set up the Mohu Airwave in two ways. First, you can have a completely wireless setup. The antenna connects to the Power Bridge via a coaxial cable and the Power Bridge connects to your Router wirelessly. Alternatively, the Power Bridge can be plugged into your router via an Ethernet cable. Which set-up you opt for is going to depend on where your home router is situated and where you need to place the antenna for optimal reception. We recommend, however, that you connect the Power Bridge to your router via Ethernet as it can result in better performance.

Once you’ve got the antenna and the Power Bridge set up, you’ll need to download the Mohu app for all of the devices you want to watch OTA broadcasts on. Be aware that the Mohu Airwave and your streaming device must be on the same Wi-Fi network in order to communicate to each other. Once the Mohu app is installed, simply following the prompts from within the app. The Mohu app should “see” the Mohu Airwave and available channels should begin appearing in your channel guide. Easy!

Mohu Airwave Cost

As we mentioned above, the Mohu Airwave comes in three different flavors: Basic, Plus and Premium. The Mohu Airwave Basic includes the standard 30-mile range HDTV antenna and retails for $199.99. The Airwave Plus has an upgraded antenna capable of grabbing broadcasts up to 40-miles away. The Airwave Plus has a sticker price of $209.99. Finally, the Airwave Premium comes bundled with the most powerful HDTV antenna, one able to pull down channels from 70 miles away. The Airwave Premium rings up at $219.99. Which is the right pick will largely depend on the individual.

The Mohu Airwave is often available on Amazon for less than the full retail price!

Bottom Line

The Mohu Airwave is an innovative product that combines OTA television broadcasts with video streaming services. This gives users the closest experience to traditional channel surfing outside of a cable TV subscription.

The Mohu Airwave is a bit of an investment, however, with the base model starting at $200. Furthermore, performance of the Mohu Airwave is going to largely depend on your home network, so individual mileage may vary.

Overall, the Mohu Airwave is an exciting piece of technology that’s only going to get better. Get those scissors ready, I have a feeling there’s going to be some cable snipping in the near future.
