Apple TV+ review
Apple has never shied away from competing against the big dogs. And now with Apple TV+, the tech giant is throwing its hat in the streaming content ring. Apple TV+ allows subscribers to stream high-quality original content for a fraction of the price of several of its competitors at $4.99/mo.
Apple TV+ just launched on November 1, 2019, and it currently has a small but high-quality selection of original content. Apple’s service won’t rely on syndicated shows, such as Seinfeld for content. Instead, the company plans to make waves by producing top-tier original shows and movies, making the new Apple streaming service available for significantly less than what Netflix and Amazon Prime Video charge. Also, Apple is forming a partnership with Samsung to make the streaming service available on all its smart TVs. However, if you’re already an Apple user, you can access content via Apple TVs, iPads, iPhones and Macs.

How much is Apple TV+ compared to competitors?
Apple TV+ costs $4.99/mo., which is substantially less than most of its direct competitors. Other popular streaming services are more expensive. Netflix ranges from $8.99/mo. to $15.99/mo. and its Standard plan costs $12.99/mo. Amazon Prime Video is priced at $8.99/mo. and is in the same general range.
Apple TV+ Free Year Deal

Is Apple TV+ the right streaming service for you?
If you’re a big fan of high-quality original content, Apple TV+ should make your shortlist. It has plenty of premium content available at a very “non-premium” price. Those who like to binge-watch captivating shows and movies will enjoy the level of content Apple TV+ is already producing and plans to introduce soon.
Currently, the new streaming service has one documentary and eight series. The content suits a range of tastes, from intense dramas to kid-friendly nature programming.
However, the only content available is Apple’s original programming, which means viewers get less variety. Also, if you’re big into watching oldie-but-goodie TV shows or syndicated content, you may be disappointed with Apple’s decision to forego the streaming of licensed material.
Apple TV+ is available on any Apple device. You can also view content on desktops, mobile devices and TVs.
The mobile app is intuitive and features user-friendly navigation. Since the library is small, it’s easy to find the programming you’re looking for. You can also download shows to watch offline.
All Apple TV+ content will eventually be available in 4K HDR/Dolby Vision.
Apple TV+ is compatible with the following devices:
Apple TV+ does not have its own app, but instead simply works through the existing Apple TV app. A full list of supported devices can be found here.
Apple TV+ features
In addition to its low price, Apple TV+ has no ads, and users can enjoy it on a web browser.
Download and watch later
If you have an iOS device, you can download any show or movie on Apple TV+ for later viewing. You can watch downloaded content without an internet connection.
Stream nothing but premium content
With many streaming services, you have to wade through a mass of low-quality content to get to the good stuff. Apple TV+, on the other hand, aims to provide only tier-one material. It’s teaming up with actors and producers such as Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds to bring subscribers innovative options.
Cancel whenever you want
You can end your subscription anytime you choose with a few taps or clicks on your computer, iOS device or TV. Keep in mind that once you cancel, the subscription ends immediately—even if you have time left in your free trial.
Family share plans
All Apple TV+ subscriptions can be shared with family members at no additional cost.
4K HDR Content
Many Apple TV+ programs are available to stream in 4K HDR picture quality, for those with 4K-capable devices.
New shows every month
Apple plans to launch new Apple Originals onto the Apple TV+ program at a rate of at least one per month. You can read more about upcoming shows here.
What to watch on Apple TV+
Apple TV+ is just getting started as a streaming service, which explains its relatively small library. Right now, here’s what you can watch on Apple TV+:
- The Morning Show, starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carrel. A behind-the-scenes look at a fictional morning talk show.
- See, starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard. A dystopian drama about a future where humans have lost the ability to see.
- Oprah’s Book Club, starring Oprah Winfrey and Ta-Nehisi Coates. A talk show featuring discussions of books hand-picked by the talk show host.
- For All Mankind, starring Joel Kinnaman, Shantel VanSanten and Michael Dorman. A fictional period drama based on the premise that the Russians beat the US to the moon.
- Dickinson, starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jane Krakowski, and Matt Lauria. A period drama based on poet Emily Dickinson.
- Amazing Stories, starring Edward Burns, Austin Stowell and Kerry Bishe.
- Animated shows from the makers of Sesame Street
- Animated shows from the Snoopy series
Apple TV+ caters to those who enjoy access to quality content without having to sift through a lot of shows they’re not interested in viewing. It also comes at a low price, so if you feel the original content from Apple TV+ is worth five bucks a month, you should consider giving it a shot. However, subscribers don’t have access to a wide range of shows and movies, and you’re not going to be able to catch your old-time favorites. For a longer list of titles, you might consider adding another option to your suite of video streaming services.
