BET+ review

BET (Black Entertainment Television) is the latest in a long list of cable TV networks forming on-demand video services to house their content for easy streaming pleasure. Its new streaming service, BET+, launched in the US on September 19, 2019, partnering with Tyler Perry Studios to provide original and classic African American content in the form of popular movies, TV shows, plays and sitcoms.

BET’s streaming service delivers an amalgamation of old and new with fresh series like Will Packer’s Bigger and old gems like Martin, the award-winning sitcom starring Martin Lawrence.

What is BET+?

The service provides a one-stop solution for streaming your favorite BET movies and shows. At $9.99/mo., BET+ costs more than competitors such as Disney+ ($6.99/mo.) or Hulu ($5.99/mo.), and it also tends to feature older content.

Why BET+ may be the right streaming service for you

BET’s premium streaming service offers viewers a variety of fan-favorite African American shows and classic movies. It also has original TV series, movies and specials.

User experience

As the app currently stands, it won’t let you stream videos offline. So, you’ll need Wi-Fi access to enjoy the service. Multiple viewers can watch on different devices at the same time when signed in to a BET+ account. The app works with iOS and Android phones and tablets, but keep in mind that the BET+ channel available through Apple TV and Prime Video differs from the BET+ streaming service. You can’t watch using other devices if you purchase a subscription through Apple TV or Prime Video.

Device compatibility

BET+ is currently available on:

  • iOS devices
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Amazon Kindle
  • Android devices
  • Android TV
  • Apple TV
  • Roku

BET+ features

With only 1,000 hours of content, BET+ offers fewer viewing options than Netflix or Disney+. But the app does have a few key advantages that keep it competitive.

The best of African American content

African American artists on both sides of the camera, like Tyler Perry and Will Packer, bring you new and classic entertainment in the form of docuseries, movies, TV shows, sitcoms, specials and more. The collection includes BET exclusives as well as other Viacom entities like Comedy Central and MTV.

Switch between your device and TV

You can seamlessly cast the show or movie you’re watching on your phone or tablet to your smart TV by tapping the AirPlay or casting icon at the top of the screen.

BET+ is available overseas to military service members

US military service members stationed overseas have access to BET+. The app works on most US military bases.

Watch what you want, when you want

Unlike the BET Now app where you can only stream BET broadcasting as it appears on live cable, with BET+, you decide what shows to watch and when.

Cancel at any time

If you’re unhappy with the service or wish to cancel your subscription, you can do so at any time, no questions asked. Just keep in mind that canceling procedures differ depending on your device and how you purchased the app. You may need to check BET’s website for further instructions.

What to watch on BET+

BET+’s content library consists mostly of popular hits — many of which you can’t find on any other streaming service, like Comic View and Martin. The streaming app’s library hosts a variety of comedies, dramas, movies and sitcoms that previously aired on Viacom-owned networks like BET, Comedy Central, MTV and VH1. Beloved shows include Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, Why? With Hannibal Buress and comedy specials from Eddie Griffin and D.L. Hughley. A variety of Tyler Perry movies, sitcoms and stage plays also appear in the mix. The service has several Madea movies and shows like House of Payne

BET+’s exclusive original series are the service’s main draw. The video-on-demand service is the only place to catch popular series like American Gangster: Trap Queens, an unscripted series following the lives of notorious female gangsters. Other original productions include Bigger, a half-hour comedy series developed by Will Packer and First Wives Club, an African American remake of the classic 1996 film.

The takeaway

BET+ is a prime on-demand video service that fulfills a niche in African American programming. BET+ may be for you if you want a library of all your favorite movies and series, such as Madea and Martin, while also receiving a batch of original content like First Wives Club. However, if you expect fresh content and a nearly endless well of movies and series you can get lost in, this streaming service will most likely leave you desiring more.
