HBO Max Review: Price, Shows, Release Date, & More

The online streaming industry is becoming more crowded by the day, with more companies entering the industry and offering great services. HBO already has their own services, HBO NOW and HBO Go, but a brand new streaming platform from HBO is coming soon in 2020. It’s called HBO Max, and from what we know so far, it looks like it will be a very interesting service indeed! Keep reading for our full HBO Max review.

What is HBO Max?

HBO Max is a new streaming service set to launch in Spring 2020. The service will combine the HBO library of thousands of movies, TV show episodes and documentaries, with many assets from TimeWarner (which HBO’s parent company recently merged with). Once launched, we expect the service to offer all of HBO’s programming, in addition to popular shows like FriendsRick and MortyDoctor Who and more.

HBO Max will be an on-demand service. So you won’t be able to watch TV live (except for HBO shows, which should be available live), but you will get a massive on-demand library to binge-watch any time. Keep reading for the full scoop on HBO Max shows and further details.

HBO Max Review: At a Glance

HBO Max has not yet launched, so we don’t have all the details about it yet. For now, here’s what we do know:

  • HBO Max will cost $15 per month, with no contract
  • It will include the entire HBO library (like HBO NOW does already)
  • It will include select content from the libraries of Cartoon Network, TBS, TNT, TruTV, Adult Swim, DC, Warner Bros and more
  • It will be primarily an on-demand service to watch video on demand from a large library
  • It will work on most devices, from streaming players to smartphones
  • The HBO Max launch date is slated for May 2020

As details emerge about the service, we will keep this HBO Max review updated. From what we know now, the service seems quite promising, and looks to be a great value for cord-cutters.

HBO Max Shows, Movies and Content

What shows will be on HBO Max? We don’t have full details yet, but HBO has released some teasers showing some of what will be on the service. HBO Max promises content from the following franchises:

HBO Max shows

Confirmed shows on HBO Max include:

  • The entire HBO library (including hits like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Barry, Westworld, and many more)
  • Culture-defining TV, including Friends, Rick and Morty, Big Bang Theory, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Doctor Who, and Top Gear.
  • Classic films and cult classics including Casablanca, The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Wonder Woman and many more
  • Classic and contemporary children’s programming including Sesame Street and Looney Tunes
  • Exclusive HBO Max originals not available anywhere else, including Adventure Time: Distant Lands, Love Life, Ellen’s Home Design Challenge, and many more
  • Much, much more

At launch, we expect the HBO Max library to have a decent number of shows and movies. However, HBO has not been very clear on when each show will launch. It’s likely that the service will begin with a smaller library, which will rapidly expand in the months after launch. We’ll keep this section updated as we get closer to the HBO Max launch date.

HBO Max Originals & Exclusive Shows

HBO Max OriginalsLike most competing services, HBO Max will aim to set themselves apart by offering exclusive content and HBO Max Originals. We don’t have a ton of information on HBO’s slated original content, although they have released basic info on a few shows:

Ellen’s Home Design Challenge will feature popular talk-show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres orchestrating a home design challenge with 8 aspiring designers.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands is an animated adult comedy based in the Land of Ooo. It follows Finn and his magical dog Jake as they embark on surreal adventures.

The Flight Attendant is a drama based on the novel by Chris Bohjalian. It follows the intriguing story of a flight attendant who wakes up next to a dead body, with no recollection of the events leading up to that fateful morning.

Gossip Girl follows the dramatic and often humorous story of NYC private school teens who are forced to deal with the unwanted social surveillance of the Gossip Girl.

There are at least 10 HBO Max originals slated for launch, which will be available exclusively on the service. It’s likely that these shows won’t even be available to HBO NOW subscribers, and will only be on HBO Max.

HBO Max Price & Value

How much will HBO Max cost? HBO has officially announced that HBO Max will be priced at $15 per month. There will be no contract or commitment, so users can cancel at any time without penalty.

Considering that HBO NOW already costs $15 per month, and the new HBO Max is slated to contain much more content than HBO NOW alone, we think that this price point is quite attractive. And especially because it will soon be the exclusive home to many of TV’s most popular shows, we anticipate that HBO Max will present a good value even for people who already subscribe to other competing services.

HBO Max Launch Date

When does HBO Max launch? We don’t have a firm date yet, but HBO has plans to launch HBO Max in May, 2020. More details about the service will emerge as we get closer to launch, so be sure to check back soon!

Final Thoughts

While we don’t yet know the full details of this service, from what we do know HBO Max looks to be a pretty awesome service. It’s priced at an affordable $15/month, includes the entire HBO Library plus tons of other content, and it’s slated to have some juicy originals and perks for subscribers.

How the service actually works, how user-friendly the interface is and other details remains to be seen. But from what we know now, we’ll definitely be signing up for HBO Max on the launch date!
