How to Watch HBO Live Stream Online without Cable

I remember when HBO was launched. At the time, it was an exciting new way to watch movies at home without going to the theater. In today’s world of $10 movie tickets and Netflix, HBO has had to evolve. And evolve it did. Today, the network is home to some of the most celebrated original programming of our lifetimes. It is impossible to name all of the original series, past and current, in the HBO live stream that impact everyone today.

  • Game of Thrones
  • Westworld
  • Rome
  • Deadwood
  • Oz
  • The Sopranos

Some of these shows are now in the annals of history, but they remain excellent examples of their genres.

Is it possible to watch HBO without cable when the network is so intrinsically tied to the medium? Here are several ways to make it happen.

Watch HBO without Cable Using Amazon Channels

hbo live streamIf you are an Amazon Prime user, you are in luck. In addition to all the perks you can get with a Prime membership, you also get access to Amazon Channels, which allows you to add premium channels such as HBO to your video streaming library. It integrates seamlessly into your streaming experience, so once you subscribe to HBO for an extra monthly fee, you’ll be all set.

If you don’t have Amazon Prime, here are the details on subscription. You can either pay $99 per year or $10.99 monthly for the full Prime subscription, which includes things like free 2-day shipping, a huge music library, a video streaming library, and more. You can read our review for the full list of features.

You may just want Prime for the video streaming. In that case, all you have to do is pay $8.99 per month. Then, you’ll just purchase HBO in Amazon Channels, and you’ll be all set to watch HBO without cable!

There’s good news, too. You can try out Amazon Prime FREE for 30 days. Download your free trial here.

Did you think you needed a dish or a cable subscription for DIRECTV? Well, think again. AT&T’s DIRECTV NOW is a streaming service that will allow you to get an HBO live stream with just an internet connection.

Here are some of the service’s specs:

  • A subscription to DIRECTV NOW will get you over 60 channels, plus some on-demand, for just $35 per month. No contract, no extra fees.
  • Get the HBO add-on for just $5 extra per month.
  • You can watch DIRECTV NOW from your streaming device at home or on-the-go anywhere from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
  • If AT&T is your service provider, using the mobile app won’t count as data usage.
  • The grid guide is familiar and easy to learn. You’ll feel right at home if you are still making the transition from traditional cable.

DIRECTV NOW (review) will most likely be updating and adding new features as the service grows.

Sling TV has been another shining star in streaming video. The service is owned by Dish Network and has made streaming live TV available for anyone with a high-speed internet connection for a low monthly fee.

You can stream HBO live on Sling TV. This means you can watch HBO without cable seamlessly just like you would have with a traditional cable or satellite subscription. You won’t miss a single minute of your favorite HBO movies and series!

Here is our review to learn more.

The basic Sling TV package is just $20 per month and includes a great lineup of hard to find pay TV networks, like AMC or BBC America. You can add HBO streaming to your service for only $15 per month. This will allow you watch all of HBO’s current hits, like Game of Thrones or Last Week Tonight, the night they air, live streaming.

To watch the HBO live stream, all you need is your computer or smart phone or a streaming player like Chromecast, Roku, or Apple TV. Sling TV also often has promotions on streaming devices; you can get discounts or free players when you sign up for a specific subscription. You can also sign up for a free 7-day trial and stream HBO to see what you think.

PlayStation Vue is your final HBO live stream option. This product is from Sony and is similar to DTVN and Sling. They also offer HBO for just $15 extra a month, but their basic package is more expensive overall. It starts at $39.99 per month depending on where you live.

PS Vue works with all your popular streaming players as well as PS3 and PS4, though you don’t need to be a PlayStation user to have the service. A subscription to Vue also includes a complimentary cloud-based DVR that lets you save favorite live episodes and events or up to 28 days after they air. The streaming service is also a good pick for families because it allows many simultaneous streams on various devices at one time.

Watch HBO Without Cable with HBO NOW

Of course, we couldn’t talk about how to watch HBO online without giving fans information about HBO NOW. When HBO originally launched HBO GO for their cable customers, fans who wanted to cut the cord were outraged. They, too, wanted to be able to watch HBO streaming legally online. The network did listen and eventually offered HBO NOW.

The service is $15 per month, so in some ways, it is better value to bundle it with one of the other streaming services, but your mileage may vary. Technically, it doesn’t offer the HBO streaming live, but you can watch shows through the app simultaneously as they air, which is basically the same thing. You can also watch their entire catalog of shows on-demand at your own convenience. Go back and watch the sketch comedy show Mr. Show with Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk. Or watch the final season of Girls in 2017.
